One of the things I love about graphic recording is diving into a topic or a part of society that is new to me. This time it was water. OK, everyone knows what water is, but the specific issues that are being prioritised in Sweden right now, and the regulations and requirements from the European Union were new to me.
I’m just back from two exciting days in Gothenburg, doing graphic recording for Vattenrådens Dag, Vattenmyndigheten’s yearly conference with 60 representatives of councils, volunteers and consultants who work with water issues in their local areas. (Vattenmyndigheten is the Water Authority in Sweden).
Preparing for a presentation on an unfamiliar topic
A lot of people ask me how I can take visual notes on a topic that I don’t know much about. The answer is: I prepare!
In my initial meeting with my customer, I ask about the purpose and contents of the presentation. The most important question is: if you could only tell you audience ONE thing, what would that be? Knowing this means I will be sure to include it in my illustration. (I have also noticed that sometimes it helps the speaker clarify this for themselves too!)
In this case there were seven different speakers, and it wasn’t possible to talk to all of them. My meeting was with the event organisers who were able to give me a general idea of the main point of each presentation.
I spent a few hours looking through the Vattenmyndighet website, which had a fantastic list explaining common acronyms – very useful. I also got the PowerPoint presentations in a day in advance. I had time to read through them, get a sense of the content, sketch a few ideas and look up words I wasn’t familiar with. Of course, a PowerPoint doesn’t always accurately represent the actual presentation: a page of information might be skimmed over with a few words, a page with one bullet point might spark a ten-minute discussion.

Having the presentations printed out was a huge help when I wasn’t sure how to spell something. Although I speak fluent Swedish, I still make spelling and grammatical mistakes, particularly when the pressure is on. Luckily, it’s easy to correct mistakes when it’s all digital.
I did separate illustrations for each session, which were shown after each break. A great way to recap and move on to the next session. Here they are!

Nu är jag tillbaka från två dagar i Göteborg. Jag var graphic recorder på Vattenrådens Dag 2025, ett evenemang som Vattenmyndigheten ordnar. Ämnet var vatten, såklart. Mer specifikt: återvätning, nya förordningar från EU, samarbete mellan frivilliga, kommuner och myndigheter och exempel från olika delar av Sverige.
Många frågar hur jag kan göra visuella anteckningar när jag inte är insatt i ämnet. Svaret är… jag förbereder mig!
Det är viktigt med ett möte med kunden då vi pratar igenom deras evenemang. Jag brukar ställa frågan: om du bara kan förmedla EN sak, vad är det? Att veta vad föreläsaren tycker är allra viktigast säkerställer att just den saken kommer att finnas med i min illustration.
I detta fall var det svårt att ställa frågan, eftersom det skulle vara sju olika föreläsare. Däremot fick jag deras PowerPoint-presentationer i förväg så jag kunde läsa igenom innehållet, slå upp termer jag inte kände till och skissa på några idéer.
Dessa PowerPoint-bilder var oumbärliga när jag behövde kolla hur något stavas. Jag pratar ju flytande svenska, men mitt språk är inte felfritt (som ni kanske har märkt). Det händer att jag stavar fel eller böjer orden på fel sätt. Som tur är kan jag lätt rätta till misstagen eftersom allt är digitalt.
(Tyvärr är det så att jag stava fel ibland på svenska. Eftersom jag bor i Sverige har jag inget val än att blir duktigare på svenska!)
Jag gjorde en illustration per pass. Dessa visades på skärmen efter varje rast, vilket var ett jättebra sätt att friska upp minnet av tidigare pass innan det nästa började.
